Galway Bay fm newsroom – A plan to develop student accommodation in the city has hit a roadblock.
IVS Student Development Bohermore Limited had applied for planning permission to transform an empty building into apartments for students and holidaymakers at the back of Bohermore filling station.
However the plan has been appealed to An Bord Pleanála by two third parties.
The development would involve changing the exisiting vacant three storey office building over a basement at Sandyfort Business Centre.
The applicant is hoping to redesign the building to provide a four storey building over a basement carpark.
It would accommodate 77 professionally managed student and self-catering holiday apartment suites.
These would be made up of 65 single units, 8 twin suites and 4 two-bedroom suites.
The development would also include a reception area, social spaces and storage areas aswell as a roof terrace, 57 car parking spaces and 63 bicycle spaces.
The suites would be specifically designed for use during the college semester by senior undergraduates, post-graduates and visiting academics.
However an appeal from a local resident raises concerns regarding traffic congestions, safety and parking.
It argues that the development would have a negative impact on the environment, traffic congestion, road safety and privacy.
Another appellant raises concerns regarding zoning and plot ratio.
An Bord Pleanála is due to make a decision in November.
