Diocesan Administrator to be appointed as Bishop of Galway retires

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A special meeting of diocesan leaders will be held over the weekend to appoint a Diocesan Administrator following the retirement of the Bishop of Galway Martin Drennan
The Diocesan College of Consulters will appoint the Administrator who will oversee the running of the diocese until the new Bishop of Galway is appointed by Pope Francis
Bishop Drennan has served as Bishop of Galway, Kilmacduagh and Kilfenora for the last 11 years and has retired on medical advice
The 72 year old Kilkenny native succeeded Bishop James McLoughlin and was installed at Galway Cathedral in July 2005
Bishop Drennan told Keith Finnegan he has enjoyed his time serving the people but his energy levels are not what they used to be
Bishop Drennan instigated many initiatives in the diocese including the founding of the Good Shepherd Parish in Doughiska and the reordering of parish boundaries and personnel throughout the diocese in response to changing demographics.
Last year, he welcomed Cardinal Sean O’Malley of Boston to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the dedication of Galway Cathedral
