Galway Bay fm newsroom – Over 18 thousand people flocked to the first day of the Galway Racing festival with crowds slightly down on last year.
Tote turnover was up on last year, however betting at the bookmakers was down on 2015.
The opening day attracted a crowd of 18,851, down 363 from last year.
Tote turnover yesterday finished at over 862 thousand euro, up almost 80 thousand euro on 2015.
However, betting with the bookmakers was down on 2015 at over 1 million euro, compared to over 1.2 million euro on the opening day of the festival last year.
The feature race of the day, the Connacht Hotel handicap, was won by Swamp Fox ridden by Barry Browne.
Among the strong crowd at Ballybrit was Lorraine Keane of TV3.
Today is another evening meeting with the first race going to post in Ballybrit at 5.15.
