Galway Bay fm newsroom – A Galway Roscommon TD is urging the Education Minister to immediately reverse cuts to guidance counsellors in secondary schools.
Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice says the cuts in the 2011 budget were some of the cruellest of all – and post-primary schools are now facing unprecedented demand for pastoral care.
He says it’s unfair to ask that the guidance role be spread among the entire staff – and a single point of access is crucial to students seeking help.
Deputy Fitzmaurice says Minister Richard Bruton must immediately reinstate the ‘ex-quota’ role of guidance counsellors.
