Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Health Minister says a new hospital for Galway is not on the cards – despite the recent admittal by hospital management that UHG is no longer fit for purpose.
Speaking in the Dáil, Minister Simon Harris said that there are no plans for a new hospital – and continued investment in UHG must be considered going forward.
Earlier this month, the Saolta Hospital Group admitted that UHG is no longer fit for purpose – and a brand new facility is the only solution to the ongoing crisis.
Recent statements in the Dail also described UHG as ‘bursting at the seams’ – and less than half the size of what it should be to effectively deal with demand in the region.
The issue was raised by Deputy Catherine Connolly, who told the chamber that expansion at the existing UHG site is simply short-term ‘fire-fighting exercises’.
Deputy Connolly says a new hospital is the only solution.
In response, Minister Harris could only offer the prospect of further expansion works at UHG – however, he said he will meet with concerned stakeholders next week.
