Galway Bay fm newsroom – Concerns have been raised over the proximity of Apple’s planned data centre to homes and a local school near Athenry.
The An Bord Pleanala oral hearing on the matter is underway this week at the Connacht Hotel in the city.
A spokesperson for the local community in the Lisheenkyle area says the scale of the development is a cause of concern for residents.
He says the major project will be close to a local school and a number of homes, and people are worried about Electromagnetic Fields and other potential health risks.
He added that residents are not against Apple, or the creation of jobs, but these issues must be discussed before a decision is made.
Addressing the hearing yesterday, another local said their family is concerned about the location of the proposed entrances to the data centre, and the loss of amenity space at Derrydonnell woods.
Following the ongoing discussion about Apple’s energy policies, the hearing will move on to the second of three main topics, during which the site selection process and proposed location of the centre will be discussed in detail.
