Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Union of Students in Ireland says school leavers are changing their choice of university course, over fears that they wont be able to find accommodation in Galway.
NUI Galway has over 1,800 on-campus beds – all of which have already been reserved for the new academic year in September.
Official figures reveal that nationally, there will be a shortfall of 25,000 student beds around the country, with the most serious shortages in the Dublin area.
According to property website daft.ie, privately-let 3-bed houses and apartments in the city would set students back by up to 1,800 euro per month.
The USI says the government needs to address what it’s calling ‘unattainable’ student accommodation across the country.
President Kevin Donoghue, who’s a graduate of NUI Galway says the situation is becoming increasingly difficult for students and their families.
