Galway Bay fm newsroom -Connemara area councillors have been briefed on a plan for tourism signage throughout the Connemara region.
While there are long running debates about the boundaries of Connemara, the consultants are now proposing four gateway points to the east and to the north.
Some of the Gateways named by the consultants might not find favour with historians – such as well-known archaeologist and mountain guide, Michael Gibbons.
They would claim Connemara is far further west.
However, the consultants have stayed close to the Connemara constituency boundary which is directly west of Galway city and includes the Aran Islands – and the focus is on developing tourism.
The proposed Connemara Gateways sites are at Barna, Moycullen, Cong and Leenane.
The Paul Hogarth consultancy company with offices in Edinburgh, Belfast and Dublin was commissioned by Fáilte Ireland.
According to the consultants, the proposed ‘gateways’ would make a bold statement to stake out the territory that is Connemara.
They say the signs would also create a mood of anticipation and a feeling of arrival.
Five orientation points and twenty discovery points – mainly at scenic locations within Connemara – complete the plan.
