Galway Bay fm newsroom – Four out of twelve Galway candidates have secured seats in the 25th Seanad.
The countdown to the official announcement of the new Seanad is underway, as the count continues this evening for the final panel.
Galway’s twelve candidates contested a total of 46 seats across six panels.
Carraroe-based Sinn Féin Senator Trevor O’Clochartaigh was elected to the Seanad earlier this week on the Agricultural Panel.
Salthill native, Independent Senator Gerard Craughwell secured a seat on the Labour Panel.
City-native Alice Mary Higgins, the daughter of President Michael D Higgins, has secured a seat as an Independent on the NUI Panel, alongside Ahascragh native Independent Senator Ronán Mullen.
The unsuccessful candidates include former city councillor John Connolly of Fianna Fáil, former Galway East TD Colm Keaveney of Fianna Fail, and Connemara area Fianna Fáil councillor Séamus Walsh.
Ballygar GP Dr Martin Daly, Fine Gael City Councillor Pearce Flannery, businessman Enda O’Coineen and former Aer Arann chairperson Pádraig O Ceidigh missed out on a seat on the NUI Panel.
The final Galway contender in the race is Independent Connemara area councillor Thomas Welby – although his chances are fading.
Four of the available seven seats on the administrative panel have already been filled, and the gap between Welby and his nearest rivals has widened.
