Galway Bay fm newsroom – Crime in the city was down during the first three months of the year.
The latest garda figures show that there was a reduction of 35 percent in reported crimes between January and March.
Burglaries in the city were down by more than a third in the first quarter of this year.
Shoplifting and theft from vehicles was also down, however theft from the person, such as mobile phone theft was up slightly.
Chief Superintendent Tom Curley of Galway garda division told a meeting of the Joint Policing Committee that heroin addicts are responsible for a portion of thefts.
The latest figures also show that detections for drunk driving were up by 3 per cent in the first three months of the year.
209 Mandatory Alcohol Test checkpoints were held with over a thousand breath tests conducted.
Reports of sexual assaults in the city were down by a quarter in the first quarter of the year, however there was a 20 per cent increase in domestic incidents such as breach of a Barring or Protection Order.
Public Order Offences were also up by 10 per cent between January and March, however the Chief Superintendent said that Rag Week contributed to that figure and on average there are 12 public order offences recorded each week.
