Galway Bay fm newsroom – A Galway TD is urging the Minister of State at the Department of Social Protection to clarify the future of the Rural Social Scheme.
Deputy Eamon O’ Cuiv says that the Department has indiciated that the scheme could in future be amalgamated with a number of other schemes including the TUS and CE schemes.
He says the Rural Social Scheme is a vital and flexible resource for farmers across the county – and must be protected as a stand alone programme.
The Fianna Fail Deputy says its flexibility is key to the schemes success in providing financial and social stability to farmers.
He says the Department of Social Protection is showing a lack of understanding on the workings of the scheme and the importance of its continued independence.
Deputy O’ Cuiv says Minister Kevin Humphreys needs to make it clear that the scheme will remain permanent and independent in future.
