Galway Bay fm newsroom – Former Aer Arann chairman Pádraig Ó Céidigh and daughter of the President, Alice Mary Higgins are Galway locked in a tight race for a seat in the Seanad.
Counting is underway for the three seat NUI Panel, which is currently being lead by Ahascragh native Ronan Mullen.
The outgoing Senator has received 7,719 votes, which places him comfortably ahead of his nearest rival Michael McDowell at 6,223.
Pádraig Ó Céidigh follows with 2,788 votes, while Alice Mary Higgins trails behind with 2,424.
However, Ms Higgins has so far proved more transfer friendly – and if the trend continues she may be in with a chance of clinching the hotly contested final seat.
Meanwhile, former Galway East TD Colm Keaveney has failed in his bid to become a senator, being eliminated from the Labour panel overnight.
Yesterday, Sinn Fein’s Trevor O’ Clochartaigh was successful in retaining his Seanad seat after being elected to the Agricultural panel.
