Galway Bay fm newsroom – Most of the elective surgeries due to be carried out at UHG today have been cancelled as a result of serious overcrowding at the hospital.
The Full Capacity Protocol has been implemented, as the hospital struggles to deal with a high number of admissions.
In a statement to NewsBreak, hospital management says all efforts are being made to identify patients who are suitable for discharge.
All available bed capacity is being utilised, and convalescence beds are being procured at private nursing homes to facilitate discharges.
Patients are advised only to attend the Emergency Department in a genuine emergency, and to attend their GP in the first instance.
