U.S delegation attends County Council commemorative meeting

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Visitors from the U.S state of Wisconsin are attending a special meeting at County Hall this afternoon to mark the 100th anniversary of Galway’s 1916 military action.
The meeting got underway in the last few minutes following a flag-raising ceremony and welcome reception.
The group from Washington County – which is Galway’s sister county – is today beginning a week-long tour of Galway.
The visit will include a bus tour of Connemara and trips to some of the main towns across the county, including Athenry, Loughrea and Ballinasloe.
At 7 this evening, a special reception will take place at County Hall for the relatives of the Galway men and women who were directly involved in the events of Easter 1916.
Cathaoirleach Peter Roche said it’s important to remember those who played a role in this defining period of Irish history.
Earlier the tri-colour was raised at County Hall in a ceremony lead by the Defence Forces.
It included a minute silence, a rendition of the Pipers Lament and a reading of the proclamation.
