Concern over runaway costs of Council contracts

Concerns are being raised after a contract for works at a city estate cost Galway City Council seven times more than the advertised price.
It follows the recent revelation that 13 contracts advertised by the City Council last year cost the local authority €330,000 more than anticipated.
Councillor Padraig Conneely says one of those contracts was remedial works at An Logan in Knocknacarra, which were advertised last year with a tender price of €27,000.
However, he says Galway City Council paid out €180,000 to supplier FVG Construction – an increase of almost 600 percent on the advertised price.
A recent meeting of Galway City Council heard the overall cost for 13 contracts awarded last year was €976,000 – a major increase of 50 percent on the advertised costs.
Fine Gael Councillor Conneely says a review of the City Council’s contract procurement procedure is needed.
