Galway Bay fm newsroom – A mother and daughter from Gort have settled separate 75 thousand euro cases of alleged defamation against Dunnes Stores.
Elizabeth Nuga and her daughter Afolashade Nuga of Gallaghers Lane, Glenbrack in Gort took the cases after an incident at Dunnes Stores Briarhill.
The Nugas claimed that staff at Dunnes Stores in Briarhill wrongly accused them of taking a 9 euro bottle of wine from the shop on New Year’s Eve 2013.
According to today’s Irish Examiner, the mother and daughter claimed that the words ‘I know you have that bottle of wine and the guards are on the way’ were spoken.
They also claimed that they were detained at the garda station until CCTV was reviewed and they were released.
In its defence, Dunnes Stores denied that it had defamed the women and that their detention at the garda station was at the behest of the store.
The staff member said that the Nugas had become agressive when staff attempted to talk to them about the wine and that’s what led to gardaí being called.
Galway Circuit Civil Court heard that the two cases had been settled and could be struck out.
