Galway Bay fm newsroom – Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe is one of 7 public hospitals nationwide which had to be re-inspected last year for poor hygiene and maintenance issues.
The Health Information and Quality Authority has just published its Oveview Report of unannounced infection prevention and control inspections for 2015.
39 unannounced inspections were carried out at 32 public acute hospitals between January and December last year.
7 of these hospitals required a follow-up inspection primarily due to poor hygiene standards, including Porticunula in Ballinasloe.
The other hospitals were in Cork, Kerry, Dublin, Donegal, Westmeath and Louth.
Areas which were inspected included operating theatres, endoscopy suites, oncology, intensive care and coronary care units.
Head of Healthcare with HIQA, Susan Cliffe says that Portiuncula improved its standards significantly upon re-inspection last year.
