Galway Bay fm newsroom – Efforts are again underway in Connemara to solve the issue of finding freshwater supplies for use in the salmon farming industry.
Planning permission for the laying of a pipeline will be sought by one company shortly, and Údarás na Gaeltachta is trying to find a longer term solution.
With hundreds of lakes and high rainfall, there is no shortage of water in Connemara – that is unless you are involved in the salmon farming industry.
Freshwater bathing of salmon in cages is seen as an effective way of beating amoebic gill disease and cleansing the fish.
However this caused some controversy last year when the Marine Harvest company was ordered by Galway County Council to stop bringing water in a pipe overland for use in salmon cages in Cill Chiaráin Bay – stating it was not covered by planning laws.
Another company, Bradán Beo Teo is now setting up cages in that same area and they face a problem.
They are preparing a planning application for a supply of water from the Lettermullen area on the south side of the bay.
Meanwhile, Údarás na Gaeltachta is carrying out assessments for a long term solution and a source that would supply freshwater for salmon farming in south Connemara.
